CT Angiography

A "CT" or "CAT" scan is the term used to describe a radiologic test known as "Computerized Tomography" or "Computerized Axial Tomography." The CT scanner is a doughnut-shaped machine that takes pictures of cross-sections of your body, called "slices."

The CT Angiography procedure allows visualization of the coronary arteries without hospitalization and without the risk, discomfort, and recovery time associated with the original method requiring puncturing the large artery of the groin and inserting a long plastic tube all the way up to the heart (this is known as cardiac catheterization or coronary angiography).

CT Angiography is useful for determining the degree of blockage (or the absence of blockage) in the major arteries of the heart.  It is able to distinguish between calcified plaque and non-calcified, or “soft”, plaque, whether the lesion is obstructive (causing a blockage) or non-obstructive (not causing a blockage but at risk for causing a heart attack).

The test requires only an intravenous line in the arm.  Medication may be given before the study to control the heart rate to assure an optimal picture for the radiologist.  Preliminary blood work is required since kidney function assessment is needed before all contrast studies.   Non-sedating antihistamines are given to control the “hot flash” reaction sometimes experienced with contrast studies.

Though the study takes only minutes to do, it is best to allow about one hour for the complete visit.  Results are reported by the Brigham Community Radiologists in twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

Patients who may benefit from CT Angiography include:

»  screening of asymptomatic people at risk

»  evaluation of people with non-acute chest pain

»  evaluation of people with acute chest pain

»  evaluation of people with ventricular (pumping or rhythm) dysfunction

»  evaluation of patency of bypass grafts and stents
